The Atlanta Central Library: The End of a Long Search

14 December 2009, 6 PM, Atlanta Fulton Central Library, One Margaret Mitchell Square, Atlanta

John Poros is an Associate Professor in the School of Architecture at Mississippi State University

While the Atlanta Central Public Library by Marcel Breuer owes a great deal of its design inspiration to the Whitney Museum of Art in New York City, the Central Library is the final work in a long line of inquiry into solid, sculptural building forms by Breuer. This lecture will trace the library’s genealogy in Breuer’s work, and in doing so how this building does and does not fit its “Brutalist” label.
